What exactly is Neo-classical metal?

Rocco G asked:

I know what Neo means but what is it exactly? Just metal that uses alot of classically inspired guitar scales? And that it’s usually really hard to play…What is it really? Is it bands like Children of Bodom and guitarist like Ulrich Roth and Paul Gilbert?

good Q….and I have no clue…but am answering in the hopes that someone else can clue me in…

It’s metal (like Paul Gilbert) that has a heavy classical influence. Sort of like if Bach or Vivaldi had access to electric guitars. There is also a lot of harmonizing guitar solos.

Absolutely no idea. There once was a time when it was called Rock, plain and simple, then something happened and every single band that comes out now MUST have a specific label – I have no idea why – it just confuses things. I think the radio stations had something to do with it.

I can sum it up in four sylables: Symphony X ==>

And no, it is not bands like Children of Bodom. As said, Neo-Classical has classical music influences. Which CoB does not.

Neo-Classical Metal grew out of Neo-Classical Rock, and Neo-Classical Rock IS Deep Purple and Richie Blackmore. IMO Neo-Classical Metal was invented by two Guitarists in the Early 80′s, namely Yngwie Malmsteen and Randy Rhodes, they were the first to take Blackmore’s Classical Guitar style and apply it to Metal
